Introduction

I have been wanting to write a post about loss for a very long time now, but I was inspired to put pen to paper this week, after a visit to my Sister in Yorkshire very recently, and a conversation with himself indoors just this week.

For me, it brought home the fact that deep loss and grief, doesn’t have to be about a person dying who you love which is incredibly sad and life changing, but it can be loss about many other aspects of your life to which you are deeply attached, and for whatever reason is no longer there in your day to day daily life and activities.

For me, these reflections helped me to understand a little better than I did before what loss in all its forms really feels like and how it has affected me over the past few years.(although I thought I had a good grasp on grief and loss from my specialist council training as a social worker)

I hope that in sharing this, that you too may feel and increased insight into any loss or grief that you are experiencing at the moment, and maybe just maybe give you some light at the end of what seems a very long tunnel when you are travelling through it.

When We Lose Something Beyond a Person

Loss isn’t always about death. Sometimes it’s the end of a career you loved, the collapse of a business you built from scratch, the friendship that quietly faded, or the life you thought you’d be living by now.

These moments often go unnoticed by others—no flowers, no casseroles, no comforting words. But inside, you feel the same deep ache of something precious slipping away. It changes how you see yourself, how you trust the world, and sometimes, how you find your place in it.

Loss—of any kind—isn’t just about what’s gone. It’s about how we learn to live in the space that remains.

How We View Loss Matters

Our first instinct is usually to resist loss. We want to fix it, rewind it, or pretend it’s temporary. But the truth is, how you view loss shapes everything that follows.

If you see it only as failure, you’ll stay stuck in shame and self-blame. But if you can begin—slowly—to see it as part of the human experience, as a moment that invites reflection and growth, something shifts inside you.

Think of loss as a turning point rather than a final end. You don’t have to like it (who does?), but acknowledging that it has something to teach may open a door. Maybe it’s teaching resilience. Maybe patience. Maybe it’s asking you to redefine what really matters.

When we lose something dear—like our ‘youth’ as we age, financial security that we may have spent a lifetime trying to build, or our professional identity takes a nosedive when we are made redundant, it forces us to look at what’s underneath. We discover how much of our self-worth was tied to our perceived youth and usefulness, that job title, that paycheck, that relationship. It’s not an easy truth to face, but it’s a powerful one.

How We Respond Initially to That Loss

Let’s be honest: the first response to loss is rarely graceful. It’s raw, confusing, and sometimes messy. You might deny it—“It’s fine, I’ll bounce back.” Or feel angry—“This shouldn’t have happened to me.” Maybe for some of us we just go numb.

And that’s okay, I know that now. There’s no “right” way to react when the rug gets pulled out from under you.

What matters is giving ourselves permission to feel what’s actually happening. The pressure to “move on quickly” or “stay positive” from other well meaning souls can do more harm than good. For me I have learned to allow my tears to fall, the silence, the in-between moments where you don’t know what to do next be a time of self love and try to journey through this period with patience, knowing for sure that in the natural order of things nothing lasts for ever. There is always a point of renewal a change.

Your emotions are not the problem—they’re the map. They’re pointing you toward what truly hurts, and that’s where healing begins.

Some people journal. Others talk it through with friends or find comfort in solitude. You might throw yourself into something creative or physical just to release what words can’t. Whatever form it takes, expressing your loss is not weakness—it’s strength. It’s how your heart starts to breathe again.

How We Work Through and Gain New Perspectives for the Future

Working through loss isn’t about forgetting what happened. It’s about slowly integrating it into our life story.

I like to think of it as learning to walk with a slight temporary limp (as though you sprained your ankle)—you still move forward, but differently than before. The loss becomes part of our very balance, part of how we see and understand the world at that time.

At first, we might only see what’s missing, (over the years in periods of great loss, I have felt this so strongly). Over time, though, small moments begin to return, for example laughing at a TV program, connection, curiosity about whats happening in the world around you, maybe even gratitude. We begin to see that life didn’t end when maybe our relationship or job ended, or indeed when our plans for the future that we spent so much time on -just fell apart. No, I have learned it became just a change in direction.

This stage of our loss and subsequent grief often involves reflection and redefining.

WE might ask ourselves:

• What did that job, dream, or younger identity/role mean to me?

• What parts of it do I still want in my life, in some new form?

• What values carried me through that experience that I can still rely on now?

Loss strips away the ‘never ending stuff’ that surrounds us on a daily basis, and leaves us only with what’s real. It can bring unexpected clarity. Maybe we discover that our identity was never just our career—it was our creativity, our discipline, our ability to connect with others. It was the real ‘ME’ We begin to realise that the real stuff that we have humanly built on over the years are still there even if the circumstances change.

Sometimes, gaining new perspective also means learning to accept help. Letting people in when you’d rather isolate yourself.(I am a Cancer - the Crab and have a hard shell which I retreat into when the going gets tough…) Or forgiving yourself for not having all the answers. Growth on a personal level begins to look a lot less like triumph and more like tenderness as you learn to nurture and care for your inner self.

I also remember from my old Social Work days and my training that healing isn’t linear. We’ll all have good days and days where the weight of what’s gone before us hits us all over again. I really feel that it doesn’t mean we’re going backward -It means we’re human.

The Outcome of Our Journey Through Loss

Eventually, something shifts. We wake up one morning and realise we’re not as defined by what we have lost anymore. The grief is still there, but softer—woven into who we are rather than standing in front of us ranting and shouting in our face.

We start to notice possibilities again. Maybe that new opportunity that suddenly came out of nowhere feels less terrifying and more exciting. Maybe we can find beauty in small things that in life’s busyness in the past we used to overlook. Maybe we finally understand that peace doesn’t come from getting everything back (it can never be the same again)—because for me real peace comes from making meaning out of what’s left and the life I have going forward.

The outcome of loss and our grief journey isn’t always dramatic. For me, I have often found it means a quiet strength that I can almost palpably feel. A steadier heartbeat when you lie by yourself in a quiet moment and listen to the beat as it blends with nature or a deeper empathy for others walking their own invisible roads of grief.

You might even become someone who can say to another person, “I know what it’s like to lose something dear—and I know, you’ll find your way again.” (What we are really saying is not only have we walked in your shoes - but we have felt the corns on your feet)

That kind of wisdom, empathy + and listening to another in order to understand - and not just respond can’t be taught; it’s earned through the cracks and the rebuilding.

Final Thoughts from Me to You

Loss—whether of a loved one, a job, health, or a way of life—is one of life’s greatest equalisers. It reminds us all that nothing is permanent, but also that we are endlessly adaptable and flexible to meet whatever challenges we have to face in our daily lives.

Loss I have learned is that we don’t have to rush our way through it. We need to sit with it - to learn from it.

Our loss and the grief we feel requires us to understand our need to reshape our perspective gently.

Loss is not about erasing our past, but about enriching it with a meaning and an understanding that we never would experience had we not gone through that loss.

In time, loss can become a quiet teacher. It didn’t take away my pain, but it did reveal a strength and resilience I may never have known I had, and for that I am so grateful that I can carry on and look to the future with hope afresh.

And maybe, just maybe, it can open the door to a version of life that—while different—is still deeply, beautifully yours.

If the Panama Canal isn’t on your travel radar yet, it should be. Whether you’re a cruise lover, a history buff, or just someone who appreciates seeing something truly remarkable, this is one of those “once in a lifetime” experiences that’s worth every minute.

Most people hear “Panama Canal” and picture ships going through a few big gates, but what you might not realize is just how dramatic—and surprisingly peaceful—the whole process is. Transiting the canal isn’t just another day at sea; it’s an all-day, slow-motion performance of human engineering meeting raw tropical beauty.

First things first: the early start

If you’re cruising, expect an early wake-up call. Ships usually enter the canal around sunrise, and trust me, you’ll want to be up for it. The light over the water, the thick green jungle on either side, and the sense of anticipation as you approach the first lock—it’s unforgettable. Grab a coffee, find a good viewing spot on deck, and get ready for one of the world’s great travel spectacles.

How the canal actually works

The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through a 50-mile stretch across the Isthmus of Panama. Instead of cutting straight through at sea level (which would’ve been impossible), ships are lifted up 85 feet to Gatun Lake, a man-made lake in the middle of the country, and then lowered back down on the other side.

You’ll pass through three locks going up and three going down. Each lock chamber fills with water to raise or lower your ship. It’s like watching a giant elevator for vessels—quiet, smooth, and oddly mesmerizing.

The canal pilots—experts who board each vessel to guide it through—handle everything with inch-perfect precision. You might think your ship won’t fit; there’s often only a couple of feet of clearance on either side. But somehow, they glide through as if it’s nothing.

Between the locks, you’ll drift through Gatun Lake, surrounded by dense jungle and the occasional glimpse of wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled—you might spot crocodiles sunbathing on the banks or toucans flitting through the trees. • Bring patience. The full transit takes around 8 to 10 hours, so it’s not fast—but that’s part of the charm.

• Listen to the commentary. Most ships have experts or guides narrating the transit over the PA system. It’s fascinating to hear about the history, the challenges of building it, and how the locks have evolved since 1914.

• Don’t forget the camera. Photos never quite capture the scale, but you’ll want them anyway—especially of the gates closing behind your ship.

When my cruise ship docked in Zeebrugge, I was itching to explore. But here’s the thing: the port itself is hardly glamorous – think cranes, warehouses, and shipping containers as far as the eye can see. The good news? Belgium has a clever solution: the coastal tram.

This tram is the longest in the world, running the entire 68 km stretch of Belgian coastline. Even better, it stops just outside the Zeebrugge cruise terminal. Buy a ticket from the machine or the conductor, hop on board, and in 15 minutes you’ll be in Blankenberge. Stick around for another 10 minutes and you’ll reach De Haan, a postcard-perfect seaside gem. Together, they make the perfect day trip from Zeebrugge.

First Stop: Blankenberge – Belgium’s Beach Playground

Blankenberge is buzzing with seaside energy. Its crowning glory is the pier, a dramatic art-deco walkway stretching proudly into the North Sea, complete with a circular pavilion at the end. Take a stroll here, though be warned: the sea breeze is not kind to carefully styled hair!

A short walk inland brings you to the Belle Époque Center, where you can wander through the history of Blankenberge’s glamorous heyday. Think high collars, parasols, and elegant villas built for wealthy holidaymakers at the turn of the 20th century.

And if you’re an animal lover, SEA LIFE Blankenberge is unmissable. It’s home to seals, penguins, and otters, plus a seal rescue center where injured animals are nursed back to health. Watching them splash about is worth the tram fare alone.

Next Stop: De Haan – Timeless Belgian Charm

Back on the tram, just ten minutes further along, the vibe softens into pure nostalgia. De Haan is a beauty. Unlike its livelier neighbor, this little town has preserved its Belle Époque architecture – elegant villas, leafy lanes, and not a high-rise in sight.

The town even has a brush with genius: Albert Einstein once lived here. In 1933, before moving to the U.S., he rented a villa in De Haan. You can still stroll past it today and imagine the wild-haired physicist pondering the mysteries of the universe over Belgian waffles.

The beach in De Haan is spacious, quiet, and gloriously unspoiled. Families picnic, kids build sandcastles, and cyclists whizz past with baskets of bread. I grabbed a coffee in the main square, sat back, and thought: this is the Belgium most cruise passengers miss.

• Tickets: A day ticket costs around €9.00 (great value if you plan to hop on and off). Buy from the ticket machine, conductor, or De Lijn app or from the Spar shop opposite the church where you catch the tram.

• Frequency: Trams run every 15 minutes in summer, every 20–30 minutes off-season.

• Journey time: Zeebrugge to Blankenberge is about 15 minutes; Blankenberge to De Haan another 10.

• Food: Try Belgian fries with mayo in Blankenberge or grab coffee and pastries in De Haan’s square. And yes, you’ll find waffles everywhere.

• What to bring: Comfortable shoes, a windproof jacket (North Sea breezes are no joke), and space on your phone for beach photos.

• To catch the tram: Turn left after you exit the cruise terminal and continue to the main road. Turn right and walk along the road until you see the Church. The Spar shop where you can buy a day ticket is opposite the Church. You catch the tram on the same side as the Church.

If your cruise docks in Zeebrugge, (skip the cranes and containers), and you can wander the sailing boats and waterfront when you get back from the seaside on your way to rebound your ship. The Belgian Coastal Tram is waiting – and so are Blankenberge and De Haan, with their piers, villas, and sandy stretches that might just surprise you.

Today I am looking at what the major three areas that you need (definitely a need and not a want…) to do your homework on before you book that glossy advertised cruise that looks sooooo good!

When you first look at an advert for a cruise, it may be on a Facebook page that you follow, or you may be searching the internet and looking at different cruise companies, because your best friend who has done lots of cruising says its the best holiday option ever.

MARKETING

All the ads have one thing in common and we need to have this first and uppermost in our minds as we take in those lovely visuals and which result in giving us great big ‘dopamine hits’.

I know that for many of you, a cruise is a considered holiday purchase, but even hardened travellers who have been travelling for many years are not immune to the wonderful marketing that happens in the cruise industry in order to get us to part with our money.

The reality is what we have going on in our minds is always the 100% hopes and dreams of what we would like and expect, but needless to say the actual offer and resulting experience can be somewhat different. This is because we are human we are all different and make different assumptions about what we read and see. So we cannot blame dodgy marketing for all our woes can we?

I am, according to my better half - a marketers dream for individuals who engage in impulse purchasing. Especially when it comes to small items and gadgetry!

For larger items, I do try to cover my bases, and have realistic expectations by toning down some of my internal expectations when I compare the price the companies are charging, and the cruise/destinations they are offering. That’s the basic stuff, but sometimes even the basic stuff gets overridden by the urge to keep on having and anticipating further pleasure dopamine hits once we have booked and are on the cruise itself. we have an ‘internal dialogue’ with ourselves saying how great this is going to be and emphasising all the experiences we will have which are accompanied by our own mental images with ourselves pictured in the settings of the lovely advert photos…

We need to start then with some of the very basic stuff I look at when considering what looks like a bargain, but I need to book quickly or it will sell out (or so the cruise companies and agents tell us and I am sorry to bring this part back down to reality and deflate the bubble a bit!)

Itinerary, Safety & Logistics

• Cruise itinerary: Look carefully at the ports of call, length of time in each, and whether they match your interests (e.g., cultural cities, nature excursions, or remote destinations like the Amazon or Patagonia).

Does the cruise offered definitely take you to the places you want to visit, for the length of time you want to visit, or have you been to some of the ports before? Does it offer good value for the number of ports visited compared with the actual cruise price? (Sometimes, if there are a lot of sea days and relatively few port stops this is cheaper for the cruise line to operate).

• Flights & transfers: Research the most efficient flight routes. For the USA, South America, and other longhaul destinations. You may have multiple connections—check if the cruise line offers inclusive “fly-cruise” packages or if booking flights independently is cheaper.

What are the flights with the packages? cruise lines usually block book flights at times that no one else wants, and can be indirect which means more travelling time and layover time in airports.

Maybe you are not a confident worldwide traveller and prefer to have everything in one package including the transfers and just don’t want the hassle that’s OK isn’t it? YES it is - but it is always wise to checkout the flight timings, layovers, and estimated time of flights on each leg. That way you will know exactly just how much time you will be travelling for both on the outward and inward bound journeys. You will also want to know about night flights and changeovers. Solo travellers have to be responsible for everything whilst travelling, and dragging your luggage to the loo with you can be pretty exhausting. (these are just the little things that we never seem to figure in!)

• Safety for solo travellers: Review port advisories, onboard safety protocols, and passenger demographics (some lines attract more solo travellers than others). Check if the cruise offers escorted shore excursions—these can feel safer and more relaxed than independent tours.

What are the cost of the ship’s excursions and do they offer value for money? If expensive can you book trips independently if you are confident to do so, or find a buddy to share costs with?

Safety - definitely a major consideration for a solo traveller and even more so if you are a mature female. Some ports I have no problem and feel perfectly safe wandering about on my own in the port and nearby town area. Others, I would not leave the ship unless I was on a ships excursion. Well maybe I might if I was with a group of say 2 or 3 other solo’s and we were exploring together. Even then, its worth checking out port advisories, and related petty crime rates.

Do not take your IPAD with you to take photos with. This is a definite no no, even if a Country is deemed safe. Petty criminals abound and IPADS can be snatched in a second by a proficient mini scooter rider or young individual who can run faster than you… If you have your phone that you take photos with - consider getting one of those Lanyards that go around your neck and attach to the phone through the bottom your phone case. Cheap solution, but could save you hundreds of pounds and loss of your precious information that is carried on the phone.

I didn’t want to finish this post on a negative note, so I am going to say that all the information I have given here is to give you power and options! Being informed, and being forewarned is the best scenario possible to ensure that you are getting the holiday that you want, and is the best possible specification for you.

If you have checked out the various points above against a cruise advert you have seen recently and knowing what you know and it comes out with positive vibes, then that’s great. Go ahead in confidence knowing that you have done your homework.

On the other hand, if after doing your homework and there are some compromises to be had in what you had originally thought and what is likely to happen, then maybe some more research into other areas will finally provide insight into whether you book or not. If not, you will always know that you have saved yourself from making a costly mistake.

You’ve booked the dream cruise, upgraded to the fancy drink package, and you’re ready to sip your way across the seas to the ports of your itinerary dreams.

Unlimited margaritas, bottomless cappuccinos, endless glasses of wine… sounds perfect, right? But here’s the catch: that shiny “all-inclusive” package isn’t always completely tax-free. Depending on where your ship is, you might still see a little extra charge on your account.

Let’s break it down in plain English.

The Margarita Tax: U.S. Edition

When you’re cruising in the U.S., drink packages don’t automatically shield you from state sales tax. That’s because:

- Docked in a U.S. port (Miami, Galveston, New Orleans, etc.), or

- Sailing within 3 nautical miles of U.S. shores

Sales tax applies per drink. And the rates? They vary:

- Florida: about 6–7%

- Texas: higher than Florida

- Other states: each sets its own rate

So yes, even if your piña colada is “covered,” you might still see a small tax line added to your onboard account.

VAT Happens: Cruising in Europe

In Europe, it’s the same idea, but instead of sales tax it’s VAT (Value Added Tax).

- In port or EU waters (Barcelona, Rome, Marseille) → VAT applies per drink.

- Once you hit international waters → VAT vanishes.

Rates depend on the country:

- Spain: 10%

- Italy: 10% on food, 22% on alcohol

- France: around 10%

It really does. It doesn’t matter if you’re American, Canadian, British, Australian, or from anywhere else — the tax is based on where the ship is, not your nationality. If you’re in Miami, you pay Florida sales tax. If you’re in Rome, you pay Italian VAT.

What I have found is that being a blog writer and content creator is bloody hard work and a lot less glamorous than it looks.

East Pier

On my recent NCL Dawn Cruise around Scotland, Ireland, and the Northern Cities of Europe, one of the places on the itinerary was Dublin. We were not actually berthed in Dublin though, but in Dun Laoghaire which is a short train/bus ride away.

Whilst I had originally planned to go into Dublin as there are many Museums and places of interest, I thought I would first look at this pretty town and I am now so glad I did, the feeling and atmosphere that I experienced whilst I walked and explored was amazing.

So, if you are lucky enough to be visiting Dublin too, but you are berthed here I urge you to step off your cruise ship in Dún Laoghaire (Dun Leery to the locals), and you’ll feel it straight away: sea breeze, elegant old buildings, and the sound of gulls wheeling over the harbour. You don’t need more than a few hours here to get a real taste of this pretty coastal town—so let’s take a little walking tour together.

A Stroll Along the Pier

As soon as you leave the pier, turn right and join the locals for a walk along the East Pier Promenade. It’s about a mile to the lighthouse at the end, and trust me, the views of Dublin Bay are worth every step. On a clear day, you can even see the Wicklow Mountains rolling away in the distance.

History in an Old Church

Heading back into town, it’s just a few minutes to the National Maritime Museum. You can’t miss it—it’s inside an old stone church. Inside, you’ll find model ships, maritime maps, and even a lighthouse lamp. It’s compact, so you won’t lose track of time.

A Pause in People’s Park

Next, it took me about ten minutes to the People’s Park, a leafy Victorian garden complete with fountains and flowerbeds. If you’re here on a Sunday, (one of the locals asked me how long I was staying)said that the place is buzzing with a food and craft market—perfect for grabbing a snack, coffee or real Irish handmade momento before heading back to the cruise ship.

Hidden Gems Along the Way

If you’ve got a little extra time, swing by the Forty Foot, a famous swimming spot where brave Dubliners hurl themselves into the chilly sea. Or duck into the modern dlr LexIcon Library—the rooftop terrace has great views, and it’s a nice quiet breather.

There was an exhibition on in the Lexicon of traditional weaving and woolen garments.

Architectural Surprises

With so many different styles it is hard to choose which of the buildings and styles I liked best. All were my favourites! Perhaps a special place in my memories though will go to the great Victorian buildings and housing.

Dun Laoghaire really is the most special of Irish Seaside Towns. The atmosphere, the friendly people, architecture, culture and history all play their important role in a place that you really would like to go back to and explore in more detail.

Suffice to say, by the time I had finished my wanderings, and stopped for a coffee to drink in all this beautiful town and harbour had to offer, it was time for me to return to the ship, without even a short bus or train ride on the Dart.

• Central Dublin: The DART whisks you into the city in 25 minutes for €3, with trains every 10 minutes.

Let’s be honest — who hasn’t daydreamed about escaping to a dreamy island, toes buried in powdery white sand, sipping something fruity or a more alcoholic cocktail while gazing out at a turquoise sea?

My idea of paradise includes vibrant coral reefs, lush green landscapes, giant tortoises, and wildlife plus a lemur or two.

Setting off from Dubai across the Indian Ocean n my last cruise I headed to Mauritius, the Seychelles, and the lesser-known but totally magical Nosy Be.

Mauritius: A Tropical Cocktail of Culture and Colour

Let’s start with Mauritius — an island that feels like a love letter to nature and diversity. Set in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Madagascar, this island is not just about beaches (though yes, they are magical). Think lush sugarcane fields, colourful Hindu temples, colonial-era mansions, and bustling markets full of spices and street food. The colour and life on Mauritius is outstanding.

One of the absolute must-dos in Mauritius is visiting the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden (say that three times fast!). Often just called the Pamplemousses Garden, this sprawling oasis is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. The highlight? Giant water lilies that look like they could hold a baby, shady palm-lined paths, and rare spices and medicinal plants. It’s peaceful, fragrant, and seriously photo and blog worthy.

I went with a group of ladies that became friendly with on our cruise, and for the driver and taxi for a full day, it was less than 40 dollars/36GBP each. You cannot get a ships excursion for that amount, nor plan your own itinerary or say how long you want to be at each stop off. If you can get a group together, this is definitely the cheapest and safest way to travel when you go onshore.

Nature lovers should also head to the Chamarel Seven Coloured Earths, a surreal geological formation where the sands naturally separate into seven distinct colours. It’s bizarre, beautiful, and surrounded by waterfalls and lush forest. Oh, and while you’re in the south, don’t miss Black River Gorges National Park — it’s Mauritius’ green lung and home to hiking trails, dramatic scenery, and rare birds like the Mauritius kestrel.

Beach Bliss in Mauritius

You can’t visit Mauritius and not talk beaches. Seriously, it’s illegal (okay, not really). The island is ringed with stunning spots, but here are a few of the best:

• Trou aux Biches – Calm, shallow, and family-friendly. Great for snorkeling.

• Flic en Flac – Popular and lively with a great mix of locals and tourists. Sunset here? Chef’s kiss.

• Le Morne – Backed by a dramatic mountain, this is the spot for windsurfing and kiteboarding.

• Île aux Cerfs – A short boat ride away, this private island is straight-up paradise with pristine beaches and turquoise lagoons.

The BBQ restaurants on the beach cook where we stopped off for a short while had amazing selections of seafood, the smell of that outdoor cooking was just so tantalising. Unfortunately as we were running out of time and they were extremely busy the day of our excursion, we just didn’t have time to sample the local fish and shrimps. We had packed so much into that day, but it never seemed hurried. Well done to our knowledgeable driver who helped so much with out planning and how long we could stay at each venue to get the most from our time there.

Seychelles: Nature’s Masterpiece

Now onto the Seychelles — an archipelago of 115 islands scattered like jewels across the Indian Ocean. If Mauritius is the tropical cocktail, the Seychelles is the champagne: luxurious, untouched in many places, and home to wildlife you won’t find anywhere else.

Let’s talk islands — because in the Seychelles, island-hopping is the way to go. Here are the three most visited (and most beloved) islands:

1. Mahé

This is the largest island and home to the capital, Victoria (one of the smallest capitals in the world!). It’s the entry point for most visitors and has some stunning beaches like Beau Vallon, where you can watch fishermen haul in their catch and then eat it fresh at a beach BBQ. Mahé is also home to the Morne Seychellois National Park, which is full of jungle hikes, waterfalls, and breathtaking views.

2. Praslin

Just a short flight or ferry from Mahé, Praslin is quieter, greener, and home to the Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for the coco de mer, the world’s largest (and most suggestively shaped) seed. You’ll also spot rare black parrots and other endemic wildlife. Don’t miss Anse Lazio, often ranked one of the best beaches in the world — soft sands, clear water, and dramatic granite boulders. Yes, please.

3. La Digue

No cars. That’s right — this dreamy little island gets around mostly by bike and ox-cart. La Digue is about as laid-back as it gets, and it’s home to the iconic Anse Source d’Argent — with rose-pink sands, crystal-clear shallows, and boulders so photogenic they practically pose for you. It’s a favourite for honeymooners and anyone wanting to unplug.

The Gentle Giants and Cheeky Lemurs

Now for a wild card: Nosy Be, off the northwest coast of Madagascar. It’s technically not part of Mauritius or the Seychelles, but it’s often included in Indian Ocean adventures — and for good reason.

Nosy Be is lush, volcanic, and totally buzzing with biodiversity. This is your chance to meet lemurs, those wide-eyed primates you’ve probably only seen in documentaries (or the Madagascar movies). There are reserves where you can see them up close, leaping through the trees like furry acrobats.

And if that’s not enough, giant tortoises — some well over 100 years old — wander freely in reserves on nearby islands like Nosy Komba. It’s a rare and moving experience to sit beside such a slow-moving piece of history.

So, Which Island Should You Choose?

Honestly? Why choose one when you can have a bit of everything? Mauritius is perfect if you want a mix of beach, culture, and adventure. The Seychelles is for nature-lovers, honeymooners, and those chasing the world’s most iconic beaches. And Nosy Be? It’s for the wild-hearted — those who want lemurs, spice markets, and something a little off the beaten path.

Wherever you go in this corner of the world, you’ll find sunshine, stunning views, and a rhythm of life that encourages you to slow down, breathe deep, and maybe, just maybe, forget what day it is.

Using a cruise ship for your holiday is the cheapest option as it get you around to most islands overnight, and then you hop on to the local water transport/boats for an excursion. Again, with my group, we booked our excursions over the internet with a local guide company, and it worked like clockwork.

LOOKING BACK WITH FONDNESS

My holiday adventures in the Indian Ocean, were the stuff that dreams are made of, and this time I can honestly say I was not disappointed, and it was everything I hoped for in seeing this part of the world. Of course, if you meet up with likeminded people, and book some extra special activities together, that is the definite icing and cherry on top of the cake.

Duxford - a Museum with a difference

I thought I would just write a small blog following the fantastic day that we had when we visited this lovely site in early June.

Tucked away in the Cambridgeshire countryside, just a short drive from Cambridge city, sits Duxford Aerodrome — a site that’s far more than just a patch of tarmac with a few aircraft. Duxford is a place where the roar of engines, the gleam of polished metal, and the stories of brave aviators all come together to bring the history of flight vividly to life. Whether you’re a die-hard aviation buff or simply curious about wartime history, a visit to Duxford is guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

History: From Biplanes to Jet Engines

Duxford Aerodrome began life in 1918, at the tail end of the First World War. Initially established as a training airfield for the Royal Flying Corps (which later became the RAF), it quickly became a permanent RAF station. During the interwar years, Duxford grew into a key centre for aviation development and fighter command.

By the time the Second World War rolled around, Duxford was fully equipped and ready to serve — and it did so with distinction. After the war, it remained active during the early Cold War years before eventually closing as an RAF station in 1961. But that wasn’t the end of its story. Today, Duxford is one of the UK’s premier aviation museums, part of the Imperial War Museums (IWM) group, and it’s home to one of the most impressive collections of aircraft in Europe.

Its Role in WWII: Defending the Skies

Duxford’s most famous chapter was undoubtedly during the Second World War. As one of the RAF’s key fighter stations, it played a critical role in the Battle of Britain. Spitfires and Hurricanes launched from its runways to intercept German bombers and fighters during some of the war’s most decisive aerial battles.

Duxford was home to No. 19 Squadron, the first RAF squadron to operate the iconic Supermarine Spitfire. The airfield also hosted USAAF units from 1943 onwards, including the 78th Fighter Group, flying P-47 Thunderbolts and later P-51 Mustangs. The mix of British and American forces gave the base a unique dynamic and contributed to the Allied war effort across Europe.

Even today, when you walk across the airfield or stand beside one of the historic hangars, there’s a tangible sense of what it must have been like when the skies above Cambridgeshire were alive with the sounds of war.

What’s in the Different Hangars?

Duxford is not just one big hangar — it’s a sprawling site with multiple exhibition spaces, each offering a deep dive into a different aspect of aviation and military history. Here’s a breakdown of what you’ll find:

AirSpace Hangar

Home to some of the most significant British aircraft ever built, including the Concorde, Lancaster bomber, Spitfire, Vulcan, and Canberra. It explores the development of British aviation and tells the story of the people who designed, built, and flew these machines.

American Air Museum

This stunning glass-fronted building houses an incredible collection of US military aircraft, from a B-52 Stratofortress to the A-10 Thunderbolt. It’s a powerful tribute to the collaboration between the UK and the US in 20th-century conflicts.

Hangar 4: Battle of Britain Exhibition

Focusing on the dramatic events of 1940, this hangar offers immersive displays about the pilots, ground crews, and support teams who kept Britain in the fight. It’s also home to Spitfires, Hurricanes, and the fearsome Messerschmitt Bf 109.

Hangars 2 & 3: Flying Aircraft and Conservation in Action

These are working hangars where you can watch skilled engineers restore and maintain airworthy historic aircraft. If you’re lucky, you might even see a Spitfire being prepped for a flight!

Land Warfare Hall

For a change of pace, head into this vast space full of tanks, artillery, and military vehicles, including a D-Day landing craft and scenes from the Normandy campaign. It’s dramatic and detailed — and especially popular with younger visitors.

Through school programs, veterans’ interviews, and digital exhibits, Duxford helps ensure that the sacrifices, innovations, and stories of the past continue to inform and inspire the future.

Nothing quite captures this special purgatory like waiting to debark (fancy word for “get off”) a cruise ship. You’re packed, suitably ready for the off, and running solely on the fumes of the last buffet breakfast and bittersweet memories of ice cold zero alcohol Rose Wine.

Waiting for your coloured luggage tags to be called  are you free to leave? Of course not. You must wait. Like a tanned prisoner in a floating hotel. There are patrolling smiling guards to check you are not trying to sneak off with an earlier colour!

Then your off, luggage hall awaits, and your anticipation that your case will be waiting for you🙏

Yes, its there.  In my current scenario not to the airport however, but a day hotel to wait for my later flight home.  Next hurdle, having to locate the secure luggage trucks that will transport my case to the airport leaving me free to board the bus for the hotel, and a walk around Port Louis to pass some time.  The hotel is very nice, and has danish pastries, coffee and juice on offer, but I would rather have an earlier flight and be on my way!

Time comes to get back on the coach, to go to the airport for my flight.  Already checked in online so baggage drop only. The waiting begins again for our flight to board.  This time only another couple of hours (as long as there is no delay!)

On board - just a 12.5 hour flight to go…

Once we hit land, La Digue instantly wrapped me up in its slow, tropical vibe. There are barely any cars here – most people zip around on bicycles or ox-carts! It’s honestly the kind of place where you half expect to see a parrot offering you a drink with a tiny umbrella in it. Some people (not me) rented bikes and cycled along sandy paths shaded by palm trees. Absolute paradise.

Top La Digue tip: Anse Source d’Argent is the star of the show here. It’s consistently ranked one of the best beaches in the world, and when you see it, you’ll get why. Giant pinkish rocks, powdery white sand, and shallow, crystal-clear water that stays warm like bathwater.

After soaking up La Digue’s magic, it was time for a quick hop over to Praslin – another stunner, but with a totally different feel. It’s a bit bigger but still has great charm.

First stop: Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that looks like something straight out of Jurassic Park. No dinosaurs, but plenty of ancient palms and the famous Coco de Mer trees – you know, the ones with the world’s largest seeds that cheekily look like, well… you’ll see.

Walking through this lush, untouched forest was honestly like stepping back in time. Every rustle in the leaves made me think some secret creature was about to emerge. Magical doesn’t even cover it.

A quick stop by for a photo to Anse Lazio too – another beach that’s basically begging to be plastered all over your Instagram. Wide stretches of velvety sand, perfect for long, lazy swims and sipping something tropical under the shade of a palm tree. And if you’re into snorkelling, the waters here are packed with colourful fish and even the odd turtle if you’re lucky. I saw two stingray but was then disappointed that my photos weren’t really clear enough…

Both islands had this incredibly relaxed, welcoming feel. No pressure, no crowds, just pure, postcard-perfect beauty everywhere you turned. Leaving felt a bit like waking up from a dream – but at least I’ve got lots of photos to remember it by.

If you ever get the chance, go. Better yet, stay awhile. La Digue and Praslin are the kind of places that stay in your heart forever.

Paperwork Check & Coordination: The Not-So-Fun but Super Important Bit

Before you start dreaming of fruity drinks and poolside naps, do a serious paperwork check.

First up: passports. Make sure yours isn’t expiring within six months of your travel date, or you might get turned away before you even set sail (seriously).

Then there’s the cruise boarding pass, health declarations (some still ask for these), and check in advance if visas or travel permits are required for the countries you are visiting.

Pro tip: Print everything and also take screenshots. Internet access always throws a wobbly when you need it most.

Preparation & Packing: Aka The Battle of the Overpackers

Packing for a cruise is like trying to predict the mood swings of the ocean—one minute it’s sunny, next minute you’re in a wind tunnel. The trick is layers, and clothing you can mix and match. don’t forget a small carry-on for your embarkation day; your luggage might not arrive at your cabin until later.

Cruise cabins are not exactly spacious, so packing cubes are your new best friend. Also, don’t forget a power strip (non-surge protected ones are usually allowed), or block adaptors that have USB ports to charge phones, ipads etc.

Medications and pharmacy are number one on your essential packing list. Do this first and get all meds organised and into your first aid bag. Even if you’ve got an iron stomach, consider the possibility you may need motion sickness tablets or bands. After more than 25 years of cruising, I have used them around 2/3 times, but I still pack them.

Transport: The Scariest Part of the Journey

The cruise ship will not wait for you. I repeat: it. will. not. wait. So please, if you’re flying to your embarkation point arrive a day early. It might cost a bit more for the hotel, but it’s worth it for peace of mind. Book transport to the terminal ahead of time—don’t rely on finding a random taxi the morning of embarkation. If this is your first cruise, it may be better if you buy a package including flights hotels and transfers etc. It may cost a little more, but you have peace of mind for your first cruise adventure.

Clothing: Swimsuits, Sandals, and That One Fancy Outfit

Cruise life is all about comfort during the day—think sundresses, shorts, flip flops—but most ships have at least one formal night so something nice, to wear for the Captains Gala or dress to impress night. Pashminas I have found are excellent for keeping the chill off in a cool air conditioned theatre or out on deck.

Choosing & Organising Excursions: So Many Options, So Little Time

This is where the fun begins! Look through the excursions offered by the cruise line, but also check out third-party ones—they’re often cheaper and more personalized. Book early though; the popular ones sell out fast.

Try to mix active days (with excursions) with chill ones (beach, spa) so you don’t wear yourself out. And whatever you do, make sure you’re back before the ship leaves port. That “left behind” YouTube video could be about you!

Once you’re finally on board, cocktail in hand, you’ll forget all the madness that went into getting there. Cruises are the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation—just make sure you pack with a little prep and patience and don’t forget your flip-flops.

Cruise cabins are not exactly spacious; I use packing cubes and have done for years. You don’t even have to unpack them just put them in the drawers as they are. Helps with repacking too. Take a power strip or an international adaptor that has USB sockets for your tech (non-surge protected ones are usually allowed).

Other essentials are sunscreen, meds, and—trust me on this—anti-nausea tablets. Even if you’ve got an iron stomach, those first few hours can be... interesting. I have been cruising over 25 years and in that time I have used them 3/4 times but boy was I glad I packed them during those times.

Transport: The Scariest Part of the Journey

The cruise ship will not wait for you. I repeat: it. will. not. wait. So please, if you're flying in, arrive a day early. It might cost a bit more for the hotel, but it’s worth it for peace of mind. Book transport to the terminal ahead of time—don't rely on finding a random taxi the morning of embarkation. That kind of stress is not what you want for the first day of your holiday. If you can, and for your first trip try and buy a package with flights and transfers, then all the worry of travel is taken from you.

Clothing: Swimsuits, Sandals, and That One Fancy Outfit

Cruise life is all about comfort during the day—think sundresses, shorts, flip flops—but most ships have at least one formal night. A nice dress or separates that you can mix and match for evenings again is very versatile.

Choosing & Organising Excursions: So Many Options, So Little Time

This is where the fun begins! Look through the excursions offered by the cruise line, but also check out third-party ones—they’re often cheaper and more personalized. Book early though; the popular ones sell out fast.

Try to mix active days (excursions) with chill ones (relax by the pool) so you don’t wear yourself out. And whatever you do, make sure you're back before the ship leaves port. That "left behind" YouTube video could be about you!
